Shopify already gives merchants a path to Bitcoin checkout.
Shopify supports cryptocurrency through additional payment methods and instructs merchants to search available crypto providers from the Payments settings in Shopify admin.
Two ways to approach Shopify
Use an additional payment provider
Shopify’s current help center tells merchants to search “cryptocurrency” under Add payment methods. Its documentation names providers including BitPay, which supports Bitcoin and Bitcoin Lightning with USD settlement.
Use a provider-specific Shopify flow
NOWPayments publishes a Shopify integration path and API tooling for crypto payments. Because Shopify changes payment architecture over time, merchants should verify that the current integration method fits their store and plan before implementation.
Costs require special attention
Shopify notes that third-party transaction fees may still apply when payments are processed through a third-party gateway. That means a merchant should model both the crypto processor’s fees and any Shopify fees relevant to its plan.
Refunds and flash-sale behavior
Shopify also warns that crypto refunds are not automatic through Shopify and must be handled through the payment gateway. Its help center notes that crypto settlement behavior can be a consideration for overselling during flash sales.
